Four years after his first release on Stones Throw, the Canadian-bred, Vermont-based artist known as Koushik presents his debut album. For fans of Panda Bear, Caribou, Maps, RJD2 and Four Tet (who released Koushik’s debut single on his Text label), this is reason to celebrate: Koushik makes supremely tuneful, beautifully rickety, hip hop-inflected electronic psych-pop with true crossover appeal. In Koushik’s masterful album, all is lush, hazy and beautiful; this is what Brian Wilson would have sounded like if he were schooled in ProTools and hung out with Beck. Every beat, every chiming chord, every birdcall is carefully planned, and amongst it all drifts Koushik’s unique ethereal vocal. It’s a swirling, reverb-drenched creation, informed by Phil Spector’s wall of sound and coloured by a palette of flutes, harpsichords and mellotrons. Though Koushik’s “backing band” dwells within his SP-303 sampler, it sounds like a dream team of late 60’s LA Wrecking Crew sessioneers and that era’s New York jazz and funk sidemen. In a vastly far-ranging album, ‘Welcome’ bristles with smooth Philly soul, ‘Bright And Shining’ breaks into something like a lost mid-60’s Eurovision entry and the title track ‘Out My Window’ is a dreamy epic.
