Ten Kens are my kind of rock. Dense, bombastic & trippy. Coming somewhere between Nirvana, Holy Fuck & Arcade Fire on opener, the single 'Bearfight', this is great stuff. The widescreen drums crash away like a behemoth, the vocals are a muffled scree occasionally bursting into moon gazing woo-hoos and the guitars sound fuzzy & trashed. The pace slows slightly as we investigate further but the rich tapestry of slightly psychedelic tribally rock remains. I hate picking songs out for individual appraisal but flicking through you've got a cool album that references The Jesus Lizard & Liars on 'Spanish Fly', caustic garage punk-funk on 'The Alternative Biker' and maybe a cross between Mudhoney & Swirlies on 'Worthless & Oversimplified Ideas'. It's a right funky, loud mixed bag with vocal duties shared between boy & girl and many guitar toting territories explored, bits of nu-school shoegazery stuff layered with some right down-tuned grungy ideals and some really voodoo lullaby vocals. Top stuff, I'd have creamed myself back in the day for an album that sounded this much growling fun! This eponymous CD only album is out on Fat Cat....

What their label says...

Another fresh signing to the FatCat roster, Ten Kens eponymously titled debut album was recorded at Breakglass Studios in Montreal with Colin Stewart (Black Mountain). A fresh sound for fans of Liars, The National and Arcade Fire.

- The band have origins rooted back to 2003. They rented a townhouse and wrote and recorded the album by themselves, before signing, increasing their line-up and recording at Breakglass Studios in Montreal with Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Pretty Girls Make Graves).

- Currently playing shows non-stop in and around their native Toronto, Ten Kens are set to widen their remit for the release of the album, with US and European tours currently in the planning stages.

- Ten Kens traverse a wealth of emotional terrain. Lyrically oblique or cryptic, suggesting worlds of possibility, their album is by turns introspective and belligerent, shot through with a pensive air and a contrary swagger, relayed via cavernous reverb.
