Peter Green is a modern classical electronic sound artist who delves into the darker realms of the human soul with his cinematic scores that spill with ghostly malevolance & magical widescreen brilliance. His 'Macbeth' opus for Rephlex is a strange journey if I remember it, giving a rather grim play a new coat of creeping wrongness. He's been doing installations for a long time now, my favourite being that he was commisioned by Mick Jagger (!?) for a soiree of some sort once upon a recent time. 'The Darkness' is a tasty surprise then, a right old creeping aural stalker that's landed with us at the towers. There's only 50 of these and from the start you get enveloped in waves of dark ambient synth and intermittent ghostly voice splicing, preceeding a gorgeous sombre piano track that makes you think of European lovers having a final, sad dalliance. Then comes the heavy waves of deep classical, like Wagner crossed with Henryk Gorecki scoring a Hitchcock film. There's a track that just screams alternative theme to Pan's Labyrinth, lots of screeing, haunted synth strings around, making you nervous but titilated. Overall you're getting a beefy opus full of some very dramatic, moving and unnerving music by someone heavily talented, a real visionary pro. This is the lovely sloth-like Cataclyst's second release, all nicely assembled black CDrs in clam shell case 'n' that, no'd in a right witchy sleeve in my eyes!

In the words of the artist:
The Darkness is the result of nearly 20 years compositional angst.
'DEHS' My knees stopped working. In 1997 we had a very cold winter with lots of snow in Norwich. Being a student studying for my Masters in the UEA at the time I was of course broke, so heating wasn't high on my list. As a result I suffered severe stabbing pains in my knees and could hardly walk. Being used to running and biking around everywhere this was quite a change for me and I retreated to the lovely centrally heated studios of the UEA where I worked late into the night with snow fluttering by the window processing Sianed Jone's vocal tones. I weaved these into a meditative piece that transports you off into other worldy spheres; a place to go, to drift, to think, to travel, to wonder, to dream. The erie tones are the effect of a single transformation and no reverb or any other processing was ever used, just skillful editing. Later sections of DEHS found their way into the track 'Kymera' on the 'Virtual Farmer' album with Mike Dred. Described by Mr Rephlex himself as "the best track ever released on Rephlex". Nice.
'Helix' was commissioned as a piece for experimental dance in Brighton. It was conceived as a never ending complex motion of cyclic patterns to be woven around the dance theme. ('99)
'The Evil Baron' was written as the Baron's theme from Marlowe's play 'Edward II' that I was working on for a West End theatrical show. Later this was cancelled, re-written and became a part of 'Macbeth'. Most of the electronic electroacoustic tracks from this production also ended up on the Rephlex release "Macbeth; an original score"
'Ming Dynasty > the Epic' was originally composed in 1991 as one of my first works at Brighton University in the notorious 'VPA' unit. The central rhythmical theme is based on recordings of a school chair. later in '98 it was extensively remixed, and then remixed again into the 'Epic' in '99 taking advantage of new sampling equipment and Mac computers obtained from my recent deal with Rephlex.
'MV' was commissioned by Mick Jagger as the opening piece for the grand launch of his new performing arts centre in Dartmouth in 2000. It also has an accompany computer graphics video made by myself and Amanda Terrington which (for it's time) was rather experimental and cutting edge. Sections of vocals came from the same source recording sessions that produced the haunting tones of 'DEHS' (Sianed Jones), there is also a short section of rhythmical synth provided by the legendary lord of the shaggy beard & bear Dave Noyze. On launch day there was an awkward moment when I was hurtling down the stairs in a frenzy of last minute performance problems and ran directly in his Lordship Jagger. Two special branch meatheads briefly muscled up to me in auto-assassination defense, before I gave them (and Jagger) the "Sod you lot, I've got more important this to do" look and then carried on running to my task. Ahhh, my closest brush with royalty... (not to mention the actual royal knobs there, of course). And a brief encounter with the Mayors daughter, but that's another story.
'Vampyre Theme' was composed as an intended character theme for a BBC movie 'Ghosts' that I was commissioned to write the score for at the time. As it turned out, this 30 second demo wasn't used so instead I reworked it into a complete piece. The haunting and slightly gritty strings evoke dark mist laden graveyards and deep catacombs, a sense of impending sensual suffocation and a deep lustful passion for darker appetites.
'From the Crypt' is also take from the movie 'Ghosts' the possessed body of Lord Nelson rises from a stone casket. (Here slightly reworked for album use).
'The Necromancer' is a completely reworked theme for the evil Necromancer trying to take over dragons and and cast London town into deepest turmoil in the 19th century. From the second film in the Ghosts series 'Ghosts; Embers'. Pure evil, the power of the mighty dark side is more compelling than we can possibly resist. On lead vocals are myself, wifey Nicky and daughter Alanna singing some great fake latin "Sanctus domino Pilbert eradicus" (Pilbert; the name of my imaginary shoulder living invisible alter ego with a truly enormous penis!)
'Rise of dragons' - also from 'Embers'. Dragons rising and being ridden, need I say more?
'Zombies', nasty trudging beasts who's bodily parts rather carelessly seem to drop off with incredible ease. A hybrid. Originally from Embers and remixed.
'Verde Divinity' written for the action movie of the same name sadly, not a very well known film!
'Northern Lights' was a piece I wrote for a BBC Radio 3 production of the Northern Lights. There is empathy for the girl Lyra and vastness and awe for huge battling airships.
'Icy' as cold and chilling as it sounds. Nasty. If you can have a fudge sundae with extra fudge whilst listening to this, see a doctor.
'The Intimidation Set' originally written as a highly experimental piece in very angstful times in 1990. Full of passion, and torment. Powerful, expressive, oppressive, intimidating. I still consider this my 'masterpiece work'. Specially remixed for Cataclyst. Written on a small Casio FZ1 sampler which eventually became the property of the infamous Mike Dred just before we partnered on several records.
