What pisses me off more than anything in the world (musically...) is the unbridled insistence that US bands are the dogs bollocks at everything. Just look at ATP. Bunches of egocentric unit shifting boring duds. I say this not out of controversy but gut feeling. It's nowt but a schmooze fest, a back slapping exercise with the occasional European band allowed in like some Masonic lapdog (I've been there and....Echo & the Bunnymen???). Where's OUR bands? Oh, they all seem to be on or associated with a Kentish imprint called Unlabel, a more post-hardcore version of Static Caravan. I used to love bands like Ligament, Cable, Fabric & Bob Tilton. For my sins, I still fucking adore the sound of sensitive men yelling over meshed, thrashed rhythm guitars whilst a drumkit is hurled in your face & a pummeled bass throbs in sympathy! It's an Island thing. Thank god we stopped invading ourselves & got on with business. There's pure poetry here on 'Unlaut' (a 30 track, 2xCD compilation of the best UK post hardcore/experimental/argie pop), not only in the tenderest moments but all over the sweaty shop. These are bands/artists akin to ones I've seen demolish pubs in Leeds. They don't hardly make it up North a lot of these talented buggers but I feel like I know them. There's a huge variety of music on offer from eerie death dub disco, to slightly Arab Strap-esque introspection through spectral folk & playful electronic breakcore to blistering post Fugazi guitar shredding. Every song is a band/person shouting "we're bastard great so listen hard" For instance, I never liked McLusky that much because I felt they tried a wee bit too hard. Here's the ones that learnt to relax a bit cos they naturally rumble like a sonic earthquake. After a record breaking (surely) 52 albums in 1 year, this blinding label demands you listen. Not a weak song to my ears (and i'm a fussy twat!) You'll hopefully be as impressed as I x Brian
